Knocknamanagh Old School, Tracton

Welcome to the KOST website.
Our aim over the next 2 years is to restore Knocknamanagh Old School, Tracton to it's original glory and also to extend it to hold:

  • A permanent, state of the art Playschool for pre-school children and an after-school service for older children, both to be run by Tracton Community Playgroup.

  • A comfortable and well-equipped meeting place for older citizens, for community groups and youth groups

  • A Centre for Artistic Expression catering for drama, film, photography, arts and crafts, music, dance etc.

  • An Exhibition Centre for local and visiting artists and craftspeople
  • Consultation and treatment rooms, study areas, IT facilities and catering facilities

  • Therefore becoming an essential part of the Tracton community for today and generations to come.

WE NEED YOUR HELP
In order to achieve our goal, we will be looking for donations, putting on fundraising events, and asking for sponsors. If you are interested in helping, please contact us.

THE HISTORY OF KOST
Knocknamanagh School was built in 1836 and was among the earliest National Schools built in Ireland. It did not close until almost 120 years later and it therefore embraces not only the local history of Tracton Parish but also the story of National Education in Ireland and the broader sweep of Irish history. Architecturally, it is also of national importance as it is one of the few two storey National Schools built in Ireland and one of the very few still in good structural condition.
